My Students

I teach 5 to 8 year old students in rural Pennsylvania. Many of my students come from low income families. All of the students qualify for Special Education and have difficulty with focusing, obtaining and retaining information. They struggles with learning to read and remembering basic sight words. The goal in my classroom is to have each student read to the best of their ability. I love to see my students blossom into readers.

Many of my students struggle with focusing and need a learning environment that is flexible and allows them to move around freely.

Having a comfortable space to do this will help them become successful learners.

My Project

Young learners need to have a comfortable area to sit and practice reading. I give my students several options, yet many of them choose to sit on the floor. They sit on the rug and partner read or read independently. I also enjoy joining them on the rug to listen to them read orally. This is the area of the classroom that we use the most. A new bigger rug would make the reading center more comfortable and more attractive to students.

Reading is so important to academic success and an attractive comfortable area will encourage students to read more.
