This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
HLIS is situated right between MCS and the Mississippi Delta, in Horn Lake, MS. We have sixteen fifth grade classes. The vast majority of my students receive lunch assistance based on their socioeconomic status. Many of my students are from single parent homes and spend a lot of time on their own at home.
Even though they all face a variety of challenges, every one of my students comes to school excited and eager to grow and learn!
My goal as their Reading and Writing teacher is to keep encouraging and growing them into successful readers, writers and thinkers.
My Project
My students are in desperate need of plastic book bins and other storage options for their classroom. They will use these bins to keep all of their materials in for class. They will use the mailbox system to organize all papers and important information to go home with them each day.
In addition to the book bins, I would like for my students to have more flexible seating options, such as the exercise balls.
By having more seating options, my students are able to be comfortable in a setting that better promotes learning.
We will use the clip boards and dry erase pouches along with the seating options, while cutting down on our paper waste.
