I teach 60 fifth grade students math and science throughout the school day. My students come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds and many of their home environments lack a comfortable place to complete school assignments.
Failure is not an option for my students.
Despite varying academic levels and home situations, they all have one thing in common, the desire to learn. They are curious, creative and nurturing. These students rise above their hardships every day and are truly an inspiration.
My Project
My students need comfortable flexible seating options to maximize learning. Students spend the majority of their day sitting in one area which often leads to a lack of focus due to discomfort. They need the opportunity to move around and be comfortable while they work. These flexible seating options will allow students to work, collaborate, and create in a comfortable classroom environment.
Alternative seating will serve as motivation for students and contribute to an increase in academic achievement.
Many of my students lack basic comforts of home and these seating options will provide those for my students. The yoga balls and wobble cushions will allow students to move around in their seats and be able to release some energy throughout the day. Stools will allow my students to be able to quickly change locations in the classroom to meet their needs. I want to add a cozy spot in the classroom library with a carpet for students to read in. My students deserve to learn in an environment that is comfortable and suits their unique learning needs.
