Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Every morning I enter a classroom of 20 energetic and hopeful six year olds. They are still young enough to think that school is the best place ever...even better than staying home! This enthusiasm lasts much longer or shorter depending on the subject we are studying. During math and science the students are amazed and mesmerized because we do hands-on projects and experiments. During social studies they are ecstatic because we study people and they get to tell a lot of personal stories. Writing time is a breeze because they always have something to write. The only time of day when I get the most disheartened is Readers Workshop. The students are very bright but many of them still do not have the love of reading I am trying to instill. I know that when I read for fun I like to curl up on a couch or comfy chair with a blanket. The students would greatly benefit from having a cozy classroom library because it would show them how fun and relaxing reading can be. I would like comfy chairs and a few new rugs for them to lie on. I would like guided reading books in great condition and throw pillows that the children can curl up on. I know they will begin to love reading if they don't have to sit at their hard desks the whole time. Help me show the children how fun, cozy and relaxing reading can really be.
