My students need carpet and a teaching table for a space to comfortably focus on their reading and writing skills during our workshops, especially as English Language Learners.
Teaching a class of English Language Learners in a urban community is a challenging, yet fulfilling task. Despite the many obstacles my students encounter every day, each one of them comes to my class in the morning with a smile and desire to learn.
Many of my students come from different cultures and backgrounds, but in my classroom we work as a cohesive community.
In our classroom community, it is my goal to make each child learn in a comfortable and welcoming environment.
My Project
The kidney-shaped table will be a necessary tool to effectively conference with students during writing. For instance, by having multiple students conference with me at a time, peer learning can occur. Students have the opportunity to apply the feedback to their own work - when I am not even directly working with that particular student!
Also, by having a classroom carpet, students will be able to read and listen to books in a less restrictive environment.
As third graders, my students cannot be subjected to sitting at their seats for eight hours a day, five days a week! By having the opportunity to learn in a different area of the classroom, they can better focus on the lessons.
