I teach in a Title I school in San Jose, California, with many English Language Learners. My 4th graders have boundless energy, work hard, and are enthusiastic to learn and try new things. They love to read, write, problem solve, and create. When given the opportunity and encouragement, they run with the opportunities given to them.
My students love our independent reading and writing time in the classroom - freedom to choose where and what they read or write has been a huge motivator for them.
They have been working hard to build enough stamina in both reading and writing to begin our reading groups, but one of the constant challenges for students is being comfortable enough to be able to maintain focus for sustained periods of work.
My students are working on building their reading and writing stamina, and they are enjoying choosing where they want to read and write in our classroom. Many kids like to sit or lay on the floor during this time, but it is often not very comfortable for them. They try using their backpacks or jackets to make themselves more comfortable, but it doesn’t always work.
Pillows and floor chairs will allow my students to choose where they would like to work in the classroom.
They can use a pillow or a floor chair to make themselves comfortable and get to work.
