My Project

I teach English at a proud historically Black high school serving a diverse population of students, including both an Early College Academy and students facing significant academic, social, and economic challenges. Although my students come from different backgrounds and experiences, they all deserve a classroom where they feel safe, valued, and inspired to succeed.

This project will transform my classroom into an environment that encourages learning while meeting many of my students' daily needs.

Inspirational artwork featuring influential Black leaders and authors will remind students that greatness looks like them and that their voices matter. These visual reminders will reinforce the literature we study and encourage students to see themselves as scholars, leaders, and changemakers.

To increase student engagement and reduce distractions, I am requesting a secure cell phone storage cabinet. Giving students a designated place to store their phones during class helps create a focused learning environment where they can participate in discussions, collaborate with classmates, and fully engage with reading and writing.

My classroom also presents environmental challenges. Located on the corner of the building, it often experiences inconsistent heating and air conditioning, higher humidity during rainy weather, and harsh fluorescent lighting. Light-diffusing covers and a portable air conditioner will help create a calmer, cooler, and more comfortable space where students can concentrate instead of being distracted by glare or uncomfortable temperatures.

Additional classroom supplies—including journals, paper, writing materials, bulletin board resources, and flexible learning tools—will support daily instruction, encourage creativity, and build an organized classroom where students can thrive.
