When I ask my students what they will do after school or during a holiday their most common answer is play video games or text on their phone. Unfortunately, they have not learned the joy of having a hobby or the thrill of creating something beautiful!
My students are energetic middle school kids who need a safe environment to be social and creative after class.
Our school has an enrollment of 805 children include 603 Blacks, 19 Asians, 11 Caucasian, 156 Hispanic and 16 students of multi-racial descent. There are 135 students enrolled in our Special Education program and 35 students whose first language is not English. The families in our community have an average income of less than $50,000. Our school is a Title I school, with 95% of our students qualifying for free or reduced rate lunch.
The students in the Comet Craft Club will meet each week after school. They will learn to read directions and follow a pattern to make a latch hook pillow. Creating origami animals will give them the opportunity to review mathematical shapes and follow detailed instructions. Mini-apothecary jewelry kits will provide an outlet for being creative and an avenue to display their work. They will learn the patience required to finish a project and experience pride from their creative efforts. Members will also have the opportunity to socialize with their peers face-to-face and learn to work with others.
The Comet Craft Club will provide a fun and safe environment for students after school.
The students will have a creative outlet for all their middle school energy, while learning to read and follow instructions. Self-esteem and social skills will get a boost when they put down their technology and work side by side with their peers.
