My students need read-a-long stories with CDs to practice reading skills. The soft seat cushions will be used for them to sit in small groups on the floor as they read.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The words, "Read it again!" are words kids love to say. They love hearing stories again and again. Children learn to read faster when they are in a literature rich environment having books read to them. I want to provide my students with many opportunities to explore books on their own.
All of the students in my school receive free breakfast and lunch.
Our school is located in a large inner-city where English is the second language. The neighborhood has been hit hard with poverty and loss of jobs. Parents would love to provide more for their children, but they are financially strapped. Also, many of the parents can't help their children at home with reading or school work because they do not speak English. It is very essential for our students to have as many supplemental learning experiences at school as we can provide. In the past, I have tried to supplement things for my classroom but due to pay cuts I can no longer afford to buy things for the classroom.
My Project
My students use to love to listen to books on cassette tapes. However, now the cassette tapes and player have been discarded because they no longer work. We have a cd player, but we do not have books with a cd. The sets of books with a cd will be an exciting addition to our classroom. Using the soft seats, the students can sit in small groups on the floor listening to the stories and practicing their reading skills. Not only will they be developing their reading skills, they will also be practicing their English speaking skills. This is a win, win!
The books with a cd will provide the students will many exciting opportunities to expand their English language abilities.
For the students that do not have someone to help them read at home, the books with a cd will provide them extra help with oral reading. The cushions will be used to sit on while reading in small groups and other activities. I can envision the students during workshop time telling a classmate, "Come read with me!"
