Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at my school share an excitement for reading and writing!
They love hands-on activities that engage them in the learning.
My teammate, Mrs. Christy Thompson, and I are reading specialists at a Head Start-6th grade elementary Title I school. Many of our students are English language learners, representing 19 countries and 31 different languages.
Our students need opportunities to interact with each other, develop oral language skills and explore literacy and math through dramatic play. Please help our wonderful students!
My Project
Due to COVID, the kindergartners in our school have not had the same social interactions playing with their friends, neighbors, or preschool classmates before entering kindergarten that they would have during normal times. These precious early opportunities for learning to get along with others, share, and problem solve are crucial for childrens' social development. We want to provide them with lots of time to play and develop these social skills in our kindergarten classes this year to make up for lost time!
We hope to create a dramatic play center in each of our four kindergarten classes by purchasing a sturdy kitchen that will provide the chance for several children at a time to try out different roles and stretch their imaginations.
A play kitchen also creates a place for students to develop literacy skills including oral language and writing.
Throughout the year, students and teachers will work together to transform the kitchen into different dramatic play scenarios, such as a restaurant, Doctor's office, Farm stand, etc.
This will provide more opportunities to weave counting and literacy into their play. Your support will help us make all of this possible.
