Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are bright, curious, and creative. Many are language learners, and live below the poverty line. My students love funny books, art projects, and investigating the natural world. They have endless questions about space, dinosaurs, and Picasso.
Many of my students are struggling with learning and physical disabilities.
They are trying very hard to become scholars, even as their academic levels range from K to 5th grade. My students are resilient, but living in poverty presents many extra challenges.
They need and deserve the best.
My Project
Most people fondly remember sitting on a carpet listening to a great story. My classroom is missing a vital component, a large rug for read aloud time. This carpet will also serve as a place for students to work in groups without sitting on our cold tile floors. Our beautiful new carpet will be large enough for even my 5th grade students.
Carpet time is community building time.
When we leave our desks and come together as a group, the room dynamics change. It becomes more like home, more cozy and less formal. We will also be conducting our weekly community circle on the rug. This circle time helps students learn how to address issues and solve problems together.
I'd really love your help in making a relaxing area for my students.
