Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a school counselor in a low-income/high poverty elementary school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. We are a Title I school and have a large population of English Language Learners. Many of them come to school with a lot of trauma, they face difficult home and family situations. School is often their only safe welcoming space.
Despite the many challenges they face, RMK Colts are an amazing group of scholars.
I emphasize social and coping skills as well as college and career readiness in my school counseling program. I am always looking to provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My Project
College and career readiness is so important starting from the elementary school. Introducing students to the endless possibilities after graduation is crucial in getting them prepared to achieve their goals. All year long we have been focusing on being prepared for our future, by having a positive mindset, goal setting, staying focused, and being kind to ourselves. On May 22nd, we will celebrate our Commitment to Our Future Day by having students make videos to their future selves about their goals and dreams and steps to how to achieve them. My student council students will interview various staff members about how they met their goals. These videos will then be shared on our school website and with our teachers. Another thing we will be doing is creating vision boards among other age-appropriate activities.
It is my goal to give them the information of the possibilities of college and careers so they have the opportunity to make those decisions as they go on their path to their future.
