My elementary school consists of mostly low-income families. Grades TK-5th grade. They are wonderful students and many are going through very traumatic events that unfortunately interfere with their ability to learn, and sometimes just function, throughout their day. I am saddened by how many students are facing issues/situations such as: one or both parents being incarcerated, a parent passing away recently or suffering from a terminal disease, divorce (sometimes very ugly divorce), absent parents, foster home placements, having anger issues, homeless situations, and so much more. The student lounge has become a refuge for some of these students. Some students who suffer from anxiety or have trouble making friends find the lounge to be a place where they can come to and feel no pressure as they can just sit and play with other kids. They know they will have a playmate or maybe just a place where they can quietly draw and color and not find themselves alone on the playground.
