Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year we are combined Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade class. All of the students in the class come from a low-income area. These students also have special needs and basic workbook materials do not always work for them. We are a small group and love to work together on special projects throughout the year.

Many of the students in the class cannot afford to bring in their own supplies.

These are young students who are learning for the first time and many of them have not experienced a learning, school environment before. When there are endless supplies the students get excited because they are able to work with the tools they need!

My Project

In our classroom, we like to draw and add coloring to many of our writing pieces and even sometimes color to relax. Being in a low-income area, the students in the class cannot always afford to buy a simple box of crayons or bring in their own dry erase markers. With such young students, they cannot go to the store and purchase items on their own.

The crayons and markers will brighten these students lives and their work!

When they are asked to use a certain color for a project and do not have this color the look of defeat comes across their faces. It becomes discouraging to them when they do not have these colors or instruments for writing. At the beginning of each the students received a fresh set of crayons and markers, but by mid-year there is a lot of wear and tear on these items as well as drying out of our markers with the amount of work that we do throughout the day.

Students with special needs learn in different ways and pens and pencils do not always help these students. Having color in their lives brightens up their work and opens their learning abilities in different ways.
