Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a school social worker at a high school in an urban school district. My students come from diverse backgrounds. In addition to school, many students have jobs and other responsibilities at home which adds to their stress levels. My students struggle to manage social, academic, and home demands throughout their day. 67% of students receive free or reduced lunch.
My students face many barriers to achieving academic success.
Many have experienced trauma and have difficulty coming to school regularly. When they do come to school, many struggle to achieve academic success in the classroom. They lack the coping skills needed to manage stress and find academic success.
My Project
These materials will give my students options when they are feeling stressed and disengaged in school. My students need things to do to keep them in school and in class. They have difficulty remaining engaged in their classes and attending classes regularly. When they miss class they fall behind and fail academically.
I want to give my struggling students coloring books, colored pencils, blank journals, and fancy pens.
These items will help engage my students by giving them creative outlets when they are struggling to stay in school and in their classes. By having something to occupy their hands they will be able to stay in class and complete their academic demands. My students often try to multitask with their electronic devices and I hope that having blank journals and coloring pages will allow them to multitask in a less distracting and disengaged manner. These items will engage those students struggling with attendance and academic failure. Students will learn creative ways to remain in class and engaged with school.
