The demographics at my school consist of Black: 65%, Hispanic or Latino: 30%, White: 2%, English language learners: 11%, and Students with special needs: 33%. Most students come from poor income households and live in foster homes and shelters. Many families are single parent households and/or working families. We are a Title I school in Harlem. All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch daily. The students at my school are a mixture of different types of learners.
Kindergarten and first grade general education and special education students learn through colorful visuals, whether in take-home books or colorful worksheets, or even ELA or Math games they play in class or at home.
Colors helps my students to distinguish between real and fake. Young children who have no background knowledge needs colors to develop comprehension through colorful pictures.
My Project
Our school does not provide color printing to teachers.
Printing/coping in colors will help my students in many ways, like labeling personal items with my students' photos, reading classroom supplies with colorful picture labels, playing phonics and math games with colorful pieces and boards, and bringing take-home books in color.
This means kindergarten and first grade students who are learning to read and write are using black and white pictures in school and at home. The ELA and math games they play are not color copies, so they cannot rely on color to help them sort.
Learning through colorful visuals will develop my students' understanding of colors in everything they see, touch, and read about!!
