Help my school change the school media center to a learning commons. My school is an inner city, elementary school located in downtown Savannah, Ga. Students attending my school span from pre-k through fifth grade. The current school library needs to be transformed into a twenty-first century learning commons. Student should feel welcome when entering the learning hub of the school. It is currently outdated and unwelcoming due to the uncomfortable hard seating and bland colors.
Flexible seating options would allow students to work together comfortably and collaborate more easily.
Students will have the ability to be more mobile and this will allow the opportunity for makerspaces. A colorful atmosphere will afford them a safe place to read, research and interact.
Creating a more inviting environment will allow students to communicate, collaborate, be able to think critically, as well as foster creativity.
Both lower and upper grade students use the media center on a daily basis. Students utilize the entire media center to read and complete activities. Flexible and comfortable spaces would allow students the freedom of taking better advantage of the learning commons.
Flexible seating allows students to remain calm, increases productivity and enhances creativity.
The flexible seating will provide the welcoming factor that is needed to increase creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication.
A successful learning common according to Beth Holland, a leading library media expert, needs to be open and transparent, as well as inviting for all students.
