My Students

I try to apply colors like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music. --Joan Miro

My ELLs, or English Language Learner students, are energetic, young pre-teens.

While some are newer immigrants, many are also U.S.-born students who come from limited English homes and/or have learning disabilities that interfere with their academic progress. Mastering social and academic English is far from easy when complicated by the developmental challenges of adolescence. Their task is difficult, and so is that of their limited English proficient parents who rely on the school to help their children where they cannot due to long work hours or knowledge gaps.

My Project

Eye-catching, realistic visuals are integral to help ELLs connect concrete and abstract ideas with their native language. Black and white printouts of photos simply lose their magic and appeal. Additionally, our school uses highlighting and color-coding systems to help students annotate text, organize writing, and track areas to improve. When providing students with reference guides and exemplar resources, having students color in accordingly is simply not a good use of time. Having a color printer quickly eliminates this unnecessary time drain. Multi-colored paper stock helps with task differentiation as my students are grouped into levels by color as opposed to a number. In short, color brings our learning world alive!

A teacher's classroom needs its own tools and supplies before it "operates" on the minds of students, like doctors heading into surgery.

A healthy printing supply is crucial to any teacher's successful daily operation. This project provides essential classroom supplies to fuel my ELLs forward on their uphill journey learning English, and helps ensure as many resources as possible are at their disposal to achieve success.
