My Students

My students learn about art through hands-on activities, colorfully illustrated books, sensory experiences and engaging step-by-step guidance. Every week I see students aged 3-14, students with speech and language delays, developmental disabilities, autism and emotional disturbance. These students are seeking greater understanding of their worlds. As their teacher, I’m seeking to broaden their skill sets, increase their social and emotional awareness, and to develop them as caring, curious citizens of the world. We are beginning a unit on portrait and figure drawing. I am having my students study angles and shapes in order to draw them. We will be looking at our own faces in mirrors and looking ay light rendering 3-D forms. We will be drawing ourselves and our peers. We will be learning about famous artists that made portraits.

My Project

Students love to use color and painting is beloved by every student I have. I believe it gives them a magical sense of control, engaging them on an intellectual and emotional level. Books that offer insight into how color and shape affect us can be life changing for at-risk youth in need of emotional regulation, self esteem and social skills. The books and paints in this project will be irresistible to my students who love books and live to paint. Blue, yello and magenta in neon tempera can be blended together to make lively greens, rich purple and violet tones, and yummy orange hues.
