My students love stories and bright vibrant pictures. These children’s books can introduce them to whole new worlds and new ways of thinking about things. By using books to introduce artists, kids will gain better understandings of who these people were and why they thought the way they did. We will follow the readings with hands on projects that will support student ideas and reinforce ideas introduced by the artists. Portraiture is important not only as a major category of paintings in art history but also because as students explore how to draw faces, they learn emotional awareness. By drawing themselves, they become more self aware.
