Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Almost my entire class is learning English as a second language. Imagine trying to learn high level vocabulary with pictures in black and white all the time - BORING!
With the recent shift to Common Core State Standards there has been a huge push for the consumption of informational text.
With a lack of resources and curriculum at the moment, I have been creating my own articles and text for my second graders to use but my kids have been reading voraciously!
I work for a Title 1 school in California where over 90% of the students are eligible for free and reduced price lunch and over 90% of the students are from ethnic minorities. It is my goal to have 100% of my students at or above grade level by the end of the year. My second grade students are incredible! 90% of my class does not speak English as their first language. I truly have a special group of students this year. No behavior challenges and every single child comes to school wanting to learn. It is the most incredible group that I have been given the opportunity to work with.
My Project
So as I mentioned before, I have been creating my own informational text to use with my students for various close reads and text to practice taking two-column notes. The problem is with no access to color ink all the beautiful photographs I am adding to the text come out in black and white. It is just n where near as engaging and captivating as photographs in color. I also print out leveled readers for my students and they are so excited to read the ones that I was able to print out in color versus the ones I had to print out in black and white only. The color ink will help to increase engagement and sustain high levels of motivation across the content areas.
Color ink is such a luxury, but what a simple asset to increase student engagement and motivation. This donation will help to improve my students' reading, critical thinking, and comprehension skills.
With a class full of English Learners, pictures in color couldn't be more important.
It helps my students to make connections to words and increases motivation. Let's bring some color into the lives of my already bright students!
