This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The founding mission of our school states that "a first-rate education is the birthright of every individual."
A first rate education for my class, nearly all of whom are students of color, must include access to culturally relevant texts and class materials that promote joy, academic and social growth, and well-rounded learning.
The students in my classroom have already taken in stride numerous changes in school curricula and administrative turnover in recent years. A significant number of students in the incoming third grade class are reading below their grade level, and they will need to take their first Common Core standardized state exams this year.
I aim to give them the tools not only to meet grade level expectations, but exceed expectations and achieve individual success regularly.
My Project
This semester I am leading an after school poetry club to help students with both emotional and academic goals. I believe that writing creatively to express themselves can help elementary-age students cope with difficult emotions and find a fun outlet – all while supporting their literacy skills!
To make my poetry club super engaging, my goal is to bring students' words to life with expressive art projects – we'll need lots of colorful paper, decorations, glue and posters to make that happen!
So far, students are working in interactive notebooks provided by Writers Matter at LaSalle University. Now, we want to kick it up a notch. We'll create our artistic representations of our poetry and eventually, host a gala to present our poetry as art to the community.
