In one corner of my classroom – where our theme is Explorers of our World – students settle into the reading treehouse nook at least once per day. When their eyes track the words on the page, sound out multiple syllables and use context clues to define unfamiliar terms, their minds ignite with the power to grow, to succeed, to flourish. This nook, sheltered with a tall tree and nestled with comfortable cushion seats, is where students want to spend their quiet moments – because in my classroom, reading is a treat. It's a delicious moment of imagination coming to life, of history unfolding before them and of new ideas taking shape. To be successful learners in elementary school, students' literacy must be supported every single day. Those students who are not yet at the 3rd grade reading level have the best chance to catch up when they spend more time having successful moments while reading independently. A set of leveled books gives me the opportunity to provide a book at each child's level for their individual reading time, and move them up to new levels as they progress. This class set will empower children to work hard at their current level so that they can shatter expectations and become lifelong lovers of reading.
