Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is made up of a diverse and spirited student body. The senior class is excited about what life after high school holds for them. The school promotes an environment that encourages ALL students to pursue a college degree. However, financial limitations are a roadblock for our students. Even 4-year eligible seniors tend to limit themselves to local community colleges, putting off immediate four-year college dreams for the less expensive, but uncertain transfer route. For our students, the process of applying to college is totally new to them and their families.

A majority of our senior class will be the first in their family to attend college.

Being a first-generation college student is a huge accomplishment and reason to celebrate for a family. Yet, families are worried by the expenses of higher education. Most students are on free and reduced lunch and will depend on federal and state financial aid to pay for college tuition. Our seniors have worked hard in rigorous classes, taken on leadership responsibilities, and hold great pride in their school. We know they are capable of success in college!

My Project

Having the technology and supplies necessary gives students a sense of preparedness in the classroom. In the uncertain transition between senior year and college, already having access to these supplies creates one less worry. Our students had the agency to choose to continue their education, and we hope they will have the supplies necessary to pursue this choice. In the spring, we will be highlighting all our college bound seniors at an event celebrating their pursuit of higher education. They have taken the time to complete applications, write essays, and apply for financial aid. We want to take the time to celebrate their choices with the help of donated class supplies that will ultimately prepare them for a college classroom!

Our students have worked hard in high school to prepare for college, now they need the resources to support their learning!

College classes require technology not only to succeed, but to even participate! To help alleviate some of the burden of cost to students who do not yet have supplies they need, we hope a few students will have an item they can use in college through this project. An Asus Laptop and the Fire tablets will be useful for students to take notes in class and complete any research for their studies. A printer will be useful for printing out class reading materials or essays for a course. Students will need a backpack to to carry around books and a laptop for long days on campus. We need help creating a sense of preparedness and excitement in students' choices to continue their educational journey!
