Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are curious and enthusiastic learners. They attend a grades 6-12 Title I school, and live in one of the roughest neighborhoods in our city. Despite these challenges, my students are eager to learn when provided with the opportunity and resources. Our school offers a safe space for them to grow and flourish.
This pandemic has taken away this safe space for my students.
My 8th and 12th graders are mourning the loss of their senior prom, senior field trip and graduation. Those moving onto different high schools and colleges will miss their chance to say goodbye to their childhood friends.
All the while they are adjusting to the loss of space for socialization with their peers, many are also dealing with concerns about their family's health and struggle to maintain their means of livelihood.
My Project
S was a student in my first period Earth Science class 3 years ago. He was very laid back and easy going. He had an inquisitive mind and worked well with his peers. S expressed an interest in pursuing medicine and I believe he will succeed. He is a dedicated runner. I used to see him running around our school building every morning at 6am, in rain, snow, and sleet, before the sun had even risen. He is well mannered and polite and I enjoyed having him in my class. He is now wrapping up his high school classes and getting ready to embark on the next step in his academic journey.
The materials in this project will be shipped directly to his home so that he can begin his college career with a little boost.
The laundry basket and detergent pods will make it easy for him to clean his clothes. The toiletry kit filled with body wash, shampoo, lotion, toothbrush, and toothpaste are basic necessities. A desk organizer is also included in the project along with some pens, pencils, highlighters, and folders. These gifts will mean one less thing for S and his parents to worry about and I know he will appreciate it. Thank you!
