Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I would like the students to have something to stare at on the wall in my classroom on the off chance that my lectures on English aren't completely enthralling. On one side of the room I have lots of travel photos from my world trips to inspire them to go far; these banners will inspire college!

We have the highest-performing students in a very low-performing district.

Our AVID program gets a surprising and unexpected number of them to apply to (and attend) colleges and universities, but seeing all of the possibilities that surround us could help them see that college and all that comes with believing and achieving. Our students are mainly of Hispanic descent, many first-generation, many the first in their family with even the chance to attend college here in the United States. I wish the best for them.

My Project

My students need college banners and flags to see that there exists a whole world of collegiate opportunities outside of our somewhat dreary Los Angeles suburb. As stated above, they will be surrounded by college stuff, which can serve to pique their interest. I already have a poster I designed and printed myself detailing my college experiences, and they are fascinated by that. Adding these banners will increase the likelihood of the students catching the education bug.

It will make a difference because in our area--Southern California's Inland Empire--we have one of the lowest college graduation rates in the state, like one in four.

College graduates are few and far between around here, which is really sad because these kids have lots of potential, so exposing them to college paraphernalia whenever possible can only help.
