My students are special because they WANT to leave our small town, get an education, and change the world. I see the desire in their eyes, but I also see that they doubt their ability to reach their goals because the majority of my seniors are low income, first-generation, and underrepresented. These kids, like many others in similar communities, see roadblocks where I see the potential for growth. My goal this year is to serve as the ultimate college access resource, providing support, encouragement, reassurance, and inspiration to every student I interact with. My hope is that this project will encourage them to complete college applications, NC Residency, and FAFSA early by providing tangible rewards to be used in getting to college.
My Project
The NC Countdown to College is an annual campaign to support high school seniors in completing three important college enrollment steps: residency, applications, and FAFSA.
I created this project so that I can provide incentive for seniors to work hard in starting the college application process during the month of October.
The items I've requested here include school supplies (to put into a bookbag I already have), a polaroid camera with film, and a 28" smart tv. High school seniors get excited about the potential of winning prizes like these. And everything I've requested can be used in college!
My plan for these items is to create a tiered prize system. Students who submit 1 college application, complete residency, and create an FSA id will be entered into a raffle to win the bookbag filled with supplies. Students who finish their FAFSA (in addition to the other requirements) will be entered to win the camera and film. Students who additionally submit one scholarship application will be entered to win the tv. Additional entries will be given for students who submit 3+ applications.
