My Project
In my new role as a Reading Specialist/Interventionist, I am constantly trying to find ways to make reading and literacy fun and engaging. This is important as many of my students have a lot of anxiety surrounding reading. Often, this means that I am looking for, or creating games where students can practice our targeted skill while playing with their peers.
This has proved to be one of the most challenging things to incorporate into my lessons as many of my students struggle with winning and losing compassionately.
I won't lie, there were many times I thought about throwing in the towel and not playing games due to the short amount of intervention time we get, but I knew that learning how to collaborate with peers compassionately and kindly was a very important life skill. Often teachers have to learn how to balance learning academics and learning life skills, so this year we made a goal to discuss how to play games, win or lose, with compassion. It has been just as rewarding to see their growth in this area as it has been to see their growth with reading!
Since it is only my first year in this position, I do not have a lot of literacy games, and would like to expand my collection to keep my students engaged. With your help, I am looking forward to continuing on this journey toward compassionate learning with my students!
