This year my fourth grade class consists of a total of 25 students. Each student comes to my classroom with a variety of abilities. One thing is for sure though, and that is that each child can read and they can learn to love to read. It is my job to provide them with meaningful opportunities to learn.
My students are always up for a challenge and find joy in learning new things each day.
They love to share their new findings with their friends and with me. It opens the doors for positive discussion between peers. It is so important for students to want to share what they are learning with others. I can't wait to see these conversations develop as we explore together this year.
My Project
My students are expected and encouraged to collaborate on a daily basis through speaking and writing. This Marker board Horseshoe table will allow a larger group of students to sit together and collaborate. Their ideas can be documented right on the table top. It would allow all students to easily participate due to the large, open space, whereas a sheet of paper only allows one person to write at a time.
Collaboration is an important part of learning for students.
Sharing ideas and listening to others' ideas allows them to open their minds up to new possibilities. In my classroom, students are asked to collaborate in all subjects. In reading, they may discuss characters' actions or feelings. In science, they may state a claim and work together to prove their claim with evidence. In math, students may collaborate to solve a problem. This activity table gives groups the opportunity to put their ideas together in a space that is easily accessible so that discussion can take place.
In addition to student collaboration, the marker board table will allow me to work with groups of students. Because of the ability to write on the table top, I can easily provide feedback, extra examples, or show models to students. This opportunities are endless!
