I work with a diverse group of high school students. Each of them comes with their own unique learning needs. However, together we are working towards one goal: to become lifelong learners, thinkers, and readers.
I am a reading teacher at a Title I school in Connecticut where 100% of my students are reading three or more levels below their grade level.
While these students face many challenges in their life and many of them have experienced trauma, they work hard each day to become better versions of themselves. Many of my students have the goal to be college and career ready but can become easily discouraged. They realize that they need to be literate individuals in order to achieve this, but this can be overwhelming for them at times. We are striving to work together to foster a positive learning environment that builds positive relationships, encourages improved student attendance and a higher level of engagement.
My students are frequently absent and often disengaged during lessons. I want to provide them with basic supplies to help protect them during this cold and flu season. Several of my students arrive at school sick for several reasons. With flu season in full swing, absences are continuing to rise!
My current average daily attendance is about 50% which leaves approximately half of of my struggling readers without high quality reading lessons.
Clorox Wipes, tissues and hand sanitizer can really help me to ensure a healthy learning space for all my students. Hopefully, this can help to decrease the spread of germs and help keep my students healthy!
When students do come in feeling "under the weather," they often want to go to the nurse or leave class. I hope that being able to provide them hot tea or hot chocolate will provide them with enough comfort to be able to relax and focus on their learning.
My goal is to keep my high school students healthy and learning in a clean and welcoming environment!
