Coffee Cart Supplies for Social Skills and Financial Literacy Learning
Help me give my students a laminator, laminating paper, color ink and a variety of coffee supplies including creamer, coffee, tea, hot chocolate and coffee carafes to improve our school based student run coffee cart.
I am a speech-language pathologist who currently provides direct services to over 60 students in grades PK-8 in three inner-city schools in Bridgeport, CT. My students face multiple challenges every day both in school and at home. 100% of my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch as we are located in a poor, inner city district.
My students are all special learners with a variety of needs.
I am currently servicing two middle school, self-contained life skills classrooms, where the focus is learning functional life skills needed to be independent learners. My students have a wide range of disabilities, including autism, intellectual disabilities, down syndrome, developmental delays and a variety of speech and language disorders. My students are all eager to learn and should have access materials that will assist with their learning.
My Project
Money and people are everywhere. Students need to learn how to add up and count money in order to be successful and independent. They also need to learn social communication skills in order to interact with members of their community in different settings. These are both skills my students struggle with on a daily basis but need to learn and master so they can succeed in school and life.
I am requesting a laminator, laminating paper, color ink and a variety of coffee supplies to enhance our coffee cart which is run by a special group of kids in a self-contained functional education classroom.
These materials will enhance our basic coffee cart which we started last year. The laminator and pouches will allow us to make colorful signs showing what we have. The ink will allow us to print in color. The coffee carafe and coffee supplies will allow us to continue to open our coffee cart up during the school year. These materials will help my students become more successful with money and math skills and social language as they run and operate the coffee cart. They will learn more about money and financial literacy as they will be in charge of all aspects of running the coffee cart - ie. selling, collecting money, making change, interacting with guests. Adding up and understanding money are financial literacy life skills we all take for granted but my students struggle with. These hands on materials will give them motivation to learn and practice money and math skills in a functional activity.
