Coding the Physical World —micro:bit Physical Computing + IoT

Help me give my students the opportunity to move from being consumers of technology, to builders of it. Coding the physical world with micro:bits & the Smart Science IoT kits, connects coding to authentic scientific investigation.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Your support will fund the purchase of micro:bit physical computing kits — a micro:bit Next-Gen Classroom Pack and ELECFREAKS micro:bit Smart Science IoT Kits — to bring hands-on coding, engineering, and applied science learning to all 960+ students at my Middle School. Housed in the school library and available for checkout by science classes, STEM Club, and Science and Engineering Fair students, these resources ensure equitable access across every grade level and course track.

The micro:bit lets students write code that controls sensors, LEDs, and motors — code that does something real and visible.

The ELECFREAKS IoT Kits extend this into real-world systems: environmental monitors, automated alerts, sensor-driven data loggers. Together they support NGSS- and TEKS-aligned instruction while opening every student up to the foundational skills of physical computing and the Internet of Things.

Engagement breeds persistence, and persistence leads to success. We want our students to see themselves not just as consumers of technology, but as builders of it. Middle school is exactly the right moment to make that shift.

Computer science is the fastest-growing occupational field in the U.S. — the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 15% growth through 2031, adding nearly 700,000 jobs. The students who arrive at high school already knowing how to code, debug, and build have a head start. We want our students to be those students.

Physical computing is one of the most powerful entry points into computer science because it makes coding tangible. A 2020 Raspberry Pi Foundation study of 7,000+ students across 11 countries found that physical computing activities produced significantly higher gains in coding confidence, persistence, and interest in computing careers than screen-only environments. The IoT dimension adds real-world urgency, which is exactly what these kits teach. The micro:bit is already used by millions of students in 60+ countries.
