My Students

Our school district is small and only includes an elementary and middle school; but, we provide rigorous academics, great teachers, and a safe learning environment for all students. We live in a diverse neighborhood just north of Milwaukee. Many families in our district are low-income or single parent families. Our district is proud of the diversity in our schools and our goal is to close the achievement gap by improving the learning for all students.

The students who come to our after school robotics program for 4th and 5th-grade students, are excited to spend an extra hour after school to learn about robots and computer coding.

I need more robots to keep up with the number of students interested in participating in this creative and challenging after school activity.

My Project

Cue robots are programmable robots that will interact with students, their environment, and each other. These robots move, wink, flash lights, and make fun noises. They have microphones for detecting sounds such as a hand clap and speakers for playing sounds. Students program Cue to control their movements using Blocky, a programming language snaps together like puzzle pieces.

My goal this year is to introduce coding/STEAM lessons afterschool programs and summer school to support students' problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration skills.

While students are learning the basics of coding, they will also be gaining cross-curricular lessons that integrate math, language art, science, and engineering. These smart robots will make a difference in my classroom because my students will be engaged in hands-on creative problem-solving, collaboration, and computational thinking.
