My 1st grade classroom is full of busy, eager learners. While all of my students come from diverse backgrounds, we learn about and embrace our ethnic and cultural differences to make our learning environment a richer place to engage their inquisitive minds.
Many of my students come from low-income backgrounds and qualify for free lunch; regardless of the challenges they face, they show up each and every day eager to learn!
My students are bright and inquisitive. I'm lucky to have such bright young minds with their millions of questions to answer daily. While they are challenged with learning deficits and attention deficits, they work hard to achieve results.
We live in a world of problems with a shortage of females in technology-based fields. Many students from low-level income families will not pursue the more difficult careers in coding, programming, engineering, etc.
My students are creative and curious, so I want to harness that power and put it toward problem solving and perseverance through coding!
Students will have access to the laptop as a separate opportunity for learning aside from the standard desktop computer. All students will have the opportunity daily to work on a coding problem or situation to learn perseverance and problem-solving skills in a mathematical setting. Ultimately, students will be able to determine how to use the coding programs that will be installed on the computer and then show other students to use the program, thus making the work collaborative. Using a laptop for this project adds freedom and excitement for the student and it does not affect normal instructional routine. Students will be able to sit around the room with the laptop or sit outside, if they prefer, to maximize the learning space.
