Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are loving Pre-Kindergarten students who are economically disadvantaged. Most come from homes with limited learning opportunities and resources. When they are introduced to the opportunity to discover and learn, they are very excited. Our class is a chance for these children to have experiences that will prepare them for kindergarten and beyond!
Since our classroom is an early childhood classroom (4-year-olds), our children's learning is focused on playing.
They think they are playing, but we really have lots of learning hidden in there!
My Project
My students love to code and play with coding robots. Coding is giving a detailed set of instructions to be followed to complete a task. Because the future world that our children will live in will depend upon computers of all kinds to run it, coding will be a skill that will be in high demand!
My kids would like to take their coding to the next level.
We have a Cricut/heat press and 4 laptops from a previous project. The previous materials and this project will allow my students to create mazes from vinyl and write code with their robots to complete the mazes that they have created!
An example of a lesson that could occur in our new coding area would begin with the students designing a maze on the laptops (4 from previous projects and 1 included in this project), using AILIHEN headphones for privacy. After the maze is designed, it could be cut on our existing Cricut and pressed onto the material with our heat press. The students could then write the code for the Sphero BOLT robot to complete their maze!
Another student that is just beginning to understand coding would be able to work with the Osmo. The Osmo Awbi and Coding Jam games allow the students to direct a character through obstacles, with very basic to more complex codes, eventually competing against each other!
