Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students consist of low SES students and military students. My students came into second grade reading on a very low level last year. By the end of the year, they made a massive growth in reading. Many students moved up four to five DRA levels over the course of the year. This is important because my students hated reading at the beginning of the year. After some creativity on my part and some perseverance on the students' part, reading became their favorite time of the day. As we go to third grade together, I want to ensure that my students have the right books to continue to love reading and make the growth necessary to be successful.

My Project

The coding robots will allow the students to bring math and science together to solve problems and practice coding. Students will learn 21st century skills that they will be able to use as successful citizens. The students that I work with are only exposed to simple technology, such as phones and tablets. Working with a coding robot will require the students to think about the technology that they are using. When they build the robot and start coding, it will be the confidence that they need to never give up no matter how hard something is or seems. As teachers, it is our job to expose our students to different technology to ensure their success.
