My Project

This Compassion Project empowers students to understand that their words, choices, and actions have a meaningful impact on others, especially when seen through the lens of a coder. As they program paths, give commands, and troubleshoot outcomes, they begin to see that even small choices can lead to positive or negative results. When a sequence doesn’t go as planned, students reflect on how their “robot” actions might affect a partner or scenario on the mat, drawing parallels to real-life interactions. This hands-on experience helps them recognize that thoughtful decision-making matters, both in coding and in how we treat others.

Using our interactive coding mat as part of this Compassion Project, students will explore how their actions—expressed through code—directly impact others, seeing how the world is affected through the eyes of another.

Throughout the lesson, students collaborate in pairs or small groups, taking turns as the “coder” and the “robot.” This structure naturally builds empathy, as students must consider how their instructions feel to someone else carrying them out. They practice giving clear, kind directions and offering supportive feedback when mistakes happen. These moments reinforce that compassion includes patience, understanding, and encouragement—especially when things don’t go perfectly the first time.

By connecting coding challenges to real-world social situations, students begin to internalize that their words and actions have consequences beyond themselves. The coding mat becomes more than a tool for learning programming—it becomes a space where students actively practice perspective-taking, kindness, and responsibility. Through reflection and discussion, they grow in their ability to see the world through others’ eyes and make choices that positively impact their community.
