It’s another year with new personalities, adventures, and possibilities ahead. The students at my school are placed at a societal disadvantage from peers in more affluent schools because of their financial backgrounds. Most of the students spend more time worrying about taking care of their siblings than dreaming of their own potential. Think about a moment when you proved a doubter wrong. My kids have the drive and fight to be anything; they just need to be given the means to do so. With the tools I hope to be able to provide them, they'll be able to explore different possibilities and practice skills to become more proficient and confident.
Every day, I am amazed about the compassion, perspectives, and questions swirling around in their brains.
You can tell that when I see my 31 munchkins, I see artists, athletes, scientists, writers, thinkers, dreamers, and the list goes on and on. The thing that connects them to one another--their hunger for knowledge and success. I believe in their potential, and I hope you can join in my fight for their futures. Help me prepare my students for greatness and possibilities.
Our school district has provided access for our students to learn coding through Code.org. My students are in love with the various features. However, they do not think they would ever be qualified enough to become a computer engineer because of their background. These coding robots will help my students see the impact computer engineers makes on everyday forms of technology and hopefully give them the confidence to explore their passion. By having the coding robots project funded, my students will be able to see real-world application of the lines of code they are learning through Code.org. Ideally this exposure will spark more interest in other students or strengthen existing passion towards coding.
