Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
According to research, coding is becoming the most in-demand skill across multiple industries. A new report from Burning Glass, a job market analytics firm, found that there were as many as 7 million job openings in 2015 in occupations that required coding skills. They also found that programming jobs, overall, are growing 12% faster than the market average.
At my Title I school in urban Pennsylvania, we are trying to prepare our students to be contenders in the growing field of computer programming.
I am teaching my 5-8 grade students how to code. Using a program called Tynker, my students are actively engaged in creating projects and scenes while learning coding skills. While playing games, they are learning a skill that they can take with them into their future.
My Project
My school has invested in several coding programs to teach the students to code. The students have really enjoyed the online programs. We have also gotten 12 Spheros- which are robots that the students can code to go through mazes and much more. The problem is that we do not have enough iPads to run the 12 Spheros and the tablets we do have are not the best quality.
With these iPads and casees , I can really make coding come to life for my students.
They would be able to not only work with the Spheros more but also explore other coding activities/ apps. There is so much out there for them to learn from, they just need the support of the iPad to do it.
