I am a High School Special Education Teacher in a rural area. My students are without a doubt some of the best students I have ever taught. They each have their own strengths that they bring into the classroom. I incorporate a wide variety of differentiated instruction to meet the individual needs of each of my students. Although they do have disabilities that require special instruction, they are all very smart and have the biggest hearts of teenagers I have met. They are truly an incredible group and at the end of the day, I learn more from them than they do me.
Our school is located in rural North Carolina. Our community over the years has been hit hard by economic failures and unfortunate weather that has caused many to be displaced. Our area specifically has taken the brunt of two hurricanes causing many of our families to be displaced and/or losing most of their belongings. The parents of our students struggle to find employment and opportunities to provide for their families.
Students often come to school out of dress code simply because they do not have the funds to purchase them.
A large population of our student body are at or below poverty level. My goal is to fully stock a uniform closet with uniforms and personal care items that can be utilized to help students who are less fortunate.
