I teach special education at a Title I elementary school.
Being a Title I school, I serve many low-income families. I have a range of students from Kindergarten through fourth grade that I see daily. I teach two subjects: language and math. My kids have a love for learning and deserve to have the supplies needed to do so. Each year I see many students that I served the year before so I am able to make lasting relationships with the students and their families so that I can best determine what materials will help them succeed and grow.
My Project
When students come to school, they come to learn. Sometimes learning is not first on their minds though. With the winter weather here and upon us, some of our kids are just worried about staying warm. Many of our families are struggling just to keep food on the table and heat in the house. They do not have the ability to purchase new clothes for each season.
Nobody wants to explain why they are wearing shorts in the snow. This is why our school provides a clothing closet. When students show up dressed inappropriately for the weather we are able to provide them with something non-embarrassing and warm. This lets them focus more on their education and less on their appearances.
