Closing the Gap Between Our Youth and Our History

Help me give my students Salvaged Pages, a collection of diary entries of youth ages 12-22, in which they shared illuminating truths of their Holocaust experiences. Each page stirs the emotions and empathy in all who read it.

My Project

Providing the youth who fill my classroom each day with access to "Salvaged Pages" is one way in which I can help close the gap between my students and our history. "Salvaged Pages" is a collection of diary entrees of Holocaust youth who documented their joys, hopes, challenges they faced, rage they experienced, grief that consumed them, endless despair that they felt, and their brutal struggle against the injustices they faced so that other youth might remember them.

It is critically important that youth gain insights into history and human nature through survivor testimonies and collections such as "Salvaged Pages", as these narratives help translate statistics into personal experiences and humanize the victims of the Holocaust.

Teaching of the Holocaust and sharing the voices of those who endured it is crucial to students' understanding of the impacts of prejudice, racism, antisemitism, and stereotyping in society, and to their development of empathy.
