Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Working in alternative education, I encounter students from all walks of life (e.g., foster care, homelessness, family dysfunction, pregnancy, poverty, gang involvement, social anxiety, mental health issues, etc.). Many of my high schoolers have missed out on pivotal aspects of their education due to obstacles - often outside of their control and extremely harmful to their learning process. I have students who: (1) Have never performed a science lab, (2) Have lacked in-person science classes over the years, (3) Have a strong dislike for science and/or school in general, (4) Have little-to-no perception of the biological diversity or natural phenomena out there, let alone what exists outside of our own city!
I want my students to realize that there is more to life than what they have been exposed to.
The world is huge! There are careers, opportunities, and knowledge at the tips of their fingers they didn't know they could attain! With this project, I am hoping to boost student motivation, engagement, and overall attendance through hands-on, laboratory learning! As we near the end of the semester, I would like to give students the opportunity to dissect an organism. These 15 bullfrogs and gloves will help students gain experience in a medical career field, improve their teamwork and critical thinking skills, and allow them to gain an appreciation for the inner workings of the body!
I am just a passionate science teacher desperately trying to show my students how fun science can be - that school is worth coming to! These requested materials will allow my students to become curious and confident critical thinkers.
