Climbing our way to Second Grade! (and college!)

My students need certain materials including a rug, easel, and materials to best meet each student where he or she is at in order to reach our big goal of college!

My Students

The challenge facing our children today is present in statistics in any newspaper. More than that they are in the faces of the seventeen first graders who walk into my classroom with a look in their eyes craving the knowledge of our classroom. We work hard. We are nice. And we will get really smart.

My students are dreamers, believers, and optimists.

They have fathers deployed, mothers absent, and grandmas who love them to pieces. They love to read and love to move. And they thanked me the first day I assigned homework. They are trusting and lovable. And they are very very far behind in a system that has begun to fail them before they have two digits in their age. But they smile everyday and they preserve. And they want to climb mountains. And they will starting already in first grade.

My Project

Right now my students Love reading. Never mind the fact that on a baseline assessment they can read only two one letter word, they Love reading. Sharing this love is a great passion of mine. However, not having a classroom carpet is getting in the way of this. While it may not initially seem necessary, it eliminates the issues of our movable make shift carpet (show room samples) that often cause the 5 and 6 year olds to get distracted from the engaging story. A carpet and easel would help eliminate some of the issues that interfere with the flow of our classroom.

My students have eyes as big as the sun.

When they saw our Mountains that we are going to climb this year (reading 500 sight words and an on level book at 60 words per minute) they beamed and could not wait to start. However, a mountain is an accurate metaphor for the task we have ahead of us. The students are already behind in a school that they have attended for only a year. Each student believes in him or herself and the ability to work hard be nice get smart... and go to college.
