Climate Change: Am I Responsible?

My students need 30 books on Climate Change so they can make an informed decision regarding its causes.

My Students

My students want to know more about climate change and these books address it in student-friendly language. Our textbooks do not cover global warming in depth mostly because it was not a commonly used term in 2000. What are the causes? What are the myths? Is climate change inevitable?

My students are typical 12-14 year old boys and girls who live in a vibrant, diverse, urban community.

Most students are first generation native born Americans attending public school. Their backgrounds are varied, but the commonality they share is one of poverty. If they are not currently surrounded by poverty their parents or grandparents were. This upbringing would make it difficult if not impossible for families to consider the environment and their impact on it on a daily basis. What I have noticed is that they want to do the right thing if they know what the right thing is. But they have to be taught. It is our job as educators to understand that when we teach our students we are also teaching their families and that is why we must go beyond reading, writing and arithmetic and include global stewardship.

My Project

Buy purchasing How We Know What We Know About Our Changing Climate, my students will have access to a complete unit on climate change. My students are currently participating in a long-term ecological research study that involves field-work by measuring the growing season here in the Northeast. These books supplement this unit and give students a better overview of climate change. In addition, we debate the causes of climate change after reading articles advocating for human causation and articles suggesting climate change is a natural phenomenon. The bottom line is that students should be able to make informed decisions about how they will approach climate change. And having all the facts in an unbiased format is going to help them make those decisions.

Money and resources are stretched to their limit in many schools and having enough for the basics is as much as we can expect.

But oftentimes teachers and students need to go beyond the basics and expand the traditional classroom curriculum to include current events such as climate change and global warming. These books along with field-work and debate will give my students a well-rounded unit of study.
