My students are diverse, academically-gifted group of kids from all over Charleston County.
Colloquially we are known as a science and math school and when considering ways to bring aesthetic world to them I realized that film-based black and white photography was a perfect fit.
B/W photography is a mix of math and science to create visual beauty and meaning.
My students live in a world awash with photographic imagery. teaching them how to analyse and create photos has the ability to increase their visual literacy, understand why certain images are so powerful, and how to develop a healthy skepticism when it comes to the apparent objectivity of the photograph--just because it looks real and true doesn't mean it is.
Almost all of the equipment and tools needed to teach my black and white film photo class were donated to our school over 10 years ago. The class has been extremely popular since then and the gear is starting to break down.
I am looking for three 35mm manual SLR film cameras for my students so that they can learn how to master the mechanics of photographic creation present in both the analogue and digital realms of the medium.
This year, 3 of my film cameras have broken down and we are in need of replacements so that each student has the opportunity use an adjustable camera when creating photographs. Hands on learning is what visual art is about. Additionally, shooting film teaches the soft skills of patience (no digital preview of your photos!) and laboratory study, use, and maintenance.
