Clear Face Masks for Speech Therapy

Help me give my students clear face masks to use during speech therapy to enable them to make progress by allowing me to determine when they are correctly producing their target sounds.

My Students

Many students in our district often come from low-income families. My school is a Title 1 school, in Tempe Arizona. They come to school without some of the basic necessities of life. Some are homeless, many qualify for free or reduced lunches, and all need a little extra love while they are at school.

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, we work with amazing students who have a variety of strengths and needs.

We help children find their voices and communicate their needs. Our students are hard workers who don't let their speech or language difficulties hinder their potential. We work on using a positive environment for growing and succeeding in the academic world.

My Project

Approximately 75% of the students who attend speech therapy at my school, do so to improve their articulation skills. These students have errors in their speech sounds which makes it difficult for adults and peers to understand what they are trying to say. This impacts not only their peer relationships but also their academics. Due to COVID - 19, all students are required to wear masks, which makes it difficult to determine when students are correctly producing their target sounds during therapy. Clear masks would help students improve their articulation skills. The full cloth masks my students are wearing now are not conducive to success in speech therapy. The masks inhibit the therapist's ability to judge the accuracy of target sounds during therapy.
