Many of the students I work with are on the Autism spectrum. Some of these students are non-verbal and require alternative forms of communication to help express their wants and needs. Many of these students are from low-income families, and do not have access to computers or any type of technology in the home. You can only imagine the frustration these students feel every day as they struggle to share their thoughts. My students have been using the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) to communicate. This system is very limited because if the picture symbol is not present, they are unable to use it to communicate. Picture symbols are also not as motivating to our students who already lack the motivation to communicate. Technology is everywhere in our society and is extremely motivating to our students. My students would benefit greatly from using an iPad device with the TouchChat app on it. This app is designed to help students who are unable to use their own voice.
