Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students are English Language Learners, who have never been to school, and the majority have never been taken care of outside of their home. They are learning to socialize with others, use writing materials, read books, and trust an adult outside the home.

My students live in severe poverty and access to care and resources are limited.

About 10% of my students have special needs and are just now able to access services. Facing all of these barriers, my students' ability to learn, have fun, and help each other in hard times are not diminished. They are amazing human beings who can rise to achieve the high expectations set for them.

My Project

My school was just informed that there were high levels of lead found in several water pipes that lead to commonly used water fountains on campus being shut down. My students (and their siblings) have been drinking lead water for as long as they have attended our school. With that knowledge, I had to act quickly to ensure that my students can get safe drinking water while they're at school.

In order to do their best in learning and develop appropriately, my students need to first have access to clean and safe drinking water.

Studies have shown that long term exposure to lead can have irreversible effects like learning disabilities, hyperactivity, irritability, along with other health implications. My students work way too hard for their water to be the one reason why they cannot have successful futures and live healthy lives. I firmly believe (and as stated by California laws) that safe, clean, accessible water is a human right, and I sincerely hope that the filter system and water bottles can serve this basic need for the time being.
