Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a second grade bilingual class in an open space school. Our class is composed of 21 native Spanish speakers who are learning both the English language and also second grade material. In addition to academic and social skills we are also learning age appropriate skills such as keeping organized and taking care of our personal belongings.
The concept of an open space school is to teach students to be respectful of those around them. We also teach concepts such as group cooperation and learning. Therefore we use tables and chairs instead of the traditional individual desk. This unique structure is beneficial because it allows students to work together but can also cause quite a mess when there is no storage space for personal things. I now rely on plastic baskets, which I purchased in September, to hold notebooks, text books, library books, and supplies for four academic areas. You can only imagine the piles of papers and books overflowing from these bins and that is if the plastic has not broke by now!
Using seat sacks instead of plastic baskets will clear table space for students to learn in a neat and organized setting. Students will benefit from cleaner tables, I will benefit from reintroducing my students to organizational skills, and our custodial staff will benefit from cleaner floors now that papers have a place for safe keeping.
Thank you for supporting our students and our community. My school and township greatly appreciate your donations and service to the public school system. It's because of people like you that our school continue to change and grow.
